Recently had the honor of photographing the WIYI YANI U THANGANI event in Canberra—an inspiring gathering amplifying Women’s Voices. Initially hesitant as I felt a woman should capture these stories, my involvement came at the request of a woman who couldn’t attend. Among the powerful moments, capturing the young and older Yinjibarndi from Western Australia’s Pilbara region was particularly moving. As they danced, initially shy, their confidence blossomed, embodying the spirit of their culture. The experience was profoundly impactful, surrounded by familiar faces and stories that echo our shared heritage. I feel my mother, grandmother and aunties would have cherished being part of this audience, listening and celebrating these powerful stories.
