I just wanted to share a little more about this photo and more specifically the scarf being worn around @aseeltayah head. The scarf is called a Kuffyiah with distinct iconography shown by the Olive Leaves, The fish Nets and the bold lines.

On the day Aseel pictured here had taken the time to explain to me the meaning behind the scarf because it's true significance only dawned on me as I watched her reach to her partner for the headscarf to ensure that was represented in her portrait, I was more focused on the writing which she had printed on her face.

I then asked a friend if she could please give me some more information surrounding the history of the head wear. Traditionally the Kuffyiah was worn by the farming class of Palestinian culture. Then in the 1960's Palestinian Leader Yassar Arafat (Nobel Peace Prize Awardee) began to use it as a symbol of Resistance and Nationalism.

There are four main components to the Kuffyiah - The olive leaf, the fishnets, the bold lines and the black and white shading.

1. A portrait of Aseel Tayah wearing her Kuffyiah in front of the State Library of Victoria. 2. An infographic sharing some information about the Kuffyiah. 3. Yassar Arafat wearing his icon Kuffyiah.
