Travelled out to the remote Aboriginal community of Pia Wadjarri in the Yama(t)ji (Midwest) region of Western Australia. 670 Kilometers north of Perth and 330 Kilometers east of Geraldton.
Pia is described as a Medium sized Aboriginal community consisting of 70 people and 15 houses, 1 school and a service provider centre.
One of the major issues which seems to be faced by the community is not a lack of water but the quality, you would be able to shower and wash yourself but unable to drink the water which means that water and fuel has to continuously shipped in.
Pia Wadjarri is also located within a radio quiet zone, with the Square Kilometre Array under construction in the area which will be used to survey the sky at low frequency. This operates with another sight in South Africa and was also selected as a part of the 2.3 billion dollar project because of the remoteness of the location and also the lack of planes that fly over the region.
Pia Wadjarri is part of two communities in the midwest region which I visited to follow a bit of the early voting currently happening with the referendum.
